In an old auto repair shop in East Williamsburg, visitors will find an artisanal brewery on the edge of Metropolitan Avenue, where, on the top level, they will also stumble upon a new pizza joint that has recently popped up permanently to complete the destination. The Grimm Brewery arrived in 2018 and the most recent update has added the new venture Lala’s Brooklyn Apizza shop on the roof to maximize its space and provide sustenance for beer and wine drinkers.
The new design, by Brooklyn-based firm Bench Architecture, sees an uplifting bright blue tiled facade provide a statement pop of color to the interior, with the tiles extending across the divide to take over an exterior wall to emphasize the indoor/outdoor qualities of the space.
A long bank of bi-fold doors reveals a wide doorway to the large terrace on which German-style beer hall benches cover the area to match the interior seating. At one end of the space, a small bar wrapped in terracotta tiles serves the beverages, while at the opposite end of the room, a pizza oven takes care of the pies. Here, an array of bottle green tile covers the wall, complementing a magenta curtain that runs the length of the space, installed to soften the acoustics of the space. The high ceiling is clad in timber, installed for its aesthetic merits and as another means of mellowing the sound in the room.
Downstairs, the brewery and wine bar provides a larger space for drinks and eats alongside regular events.
