Dutch architecture studio Concrete has designed the interiors of Japan’s first W Hotel, slated to open in March 2021 in Osaka. It joins the busy urban streetscape of Osaka as a 27-story high-rise with a black monolith facade by Tadao Ando.
Concrete’s interiors emulate the culture, vision and contrasts of Osaka, from the dominating elements of water and nature to its bright neon lights — a balance between Japanese minimalism and the indulgence of the city’s nightlife. Every curated piece reflects this aesthetic: from the rows of traditional Japanese lanterns, or chochin, that line the hotels’ Living Room bar; the Lok Jansen custom waterscape that flows in an exclusive 10-seater sushi restaurant; Osaka neon-inspired lighting in the standard guest rooms, and much more. “The goal is to share the spirit of the city with the guests of W Osaka, and to let the interior of the hotel tell a story of that is truly Osaka” the Dutch studio says. “Celebrating the opposing yet complementary forces of extravagance and simplicity.”
Concrete studio was founded in Amsterdam in 1997.
