In his latest series, photographer Leong Yong Heng transforms everyday street scenes into striking minimalist compositions that explore the interplay of color, shadow and silhouette. Strolling through urban environments, he focuses on the details, stripping away the busy visual noise to capture the geometric beauty of a building silhouetted against the sky, a pigeon perched on a ledge, or a man staring out at the world, unaware of the camera. The dramatic contrasts he finds are hidden within the ordinary moments, as he uses bold blocks of color, close-up zooms, and monotone shots to enrich his subjects. Shadow plays a defining role in Leong’s work, carving out the negative space and focusing the attention on the central figure or form at the heart of his images.
Heng’s minimalist style in this series reveals the graphic potential of the streets, his lens inviting viewers to pause and appreciate the beauty found in everyday city life.
