Maria Berman and Brad Horn, founders of architecture practice Berman Horn Studio, designed their own holiday home on an island off the coast of Maine. Little Peek sports a gabled silhouette inspired by the historic New England farmhouses of the area known as Ells.
Clad in cedar shingles, the long rectangular residence is made up of three segments, with the large main house on one end, and a smaller guesthouse on the other. Sitting between them is a patio covered entirely in glass, serving as an intermediary space between the two volumes.
The charming main volume is flush with natural light that spills in through a multitude of large industrial windows, which frame views of the water to the west, the Camden Hills to the north, and untouched ledges to the east. White walls and light-toned flooring further brighten the space, recalling the cleanliness of the Shaker aesthetic. A combination of antique and contemporary furniture pieces, floral textiles, a collection of artwork, and other decorative accents assert the character of its dwellers.
Located in such a unique site, Little Peek is the perfect escape and refuge from today’s urban existence.
