In 2015, photographer, digital artist and architect James Whitaker proposed a cluster of shipping containers as a low-cost office space solution for an advertising agency, but it was never realised. But as the saying goes, when a door closes, a window opens: and it looks like this window looks out to a plot of land on Joshua Tree National Park in California, where a film producer hired Whitaker to build the cargo container space as his future holiday home.
The photos below are computer renderings of the starburst-shaped structure, nicknamed the Joshua Tree Residence. Contrary to the proposed black-clad office space, Whitaker envisages this home as white, making it stand out in the desert landscape. The atypical cocoon will be mounted on concrete columns, and will feature a wooden deck, a solar panel-lined carport and a hot tub — definitely a project to keep an eye out for.
