The modern silhouette of Gray Villa stands out against the mountainous backdrop of Maku in Azerbaijan, overlooking a garden packed with walnut, cherry and apricot trees. Seeking an interaction with nature in both a traditional and modern sense, Iranian architecture practice White Cube Atelier designed a home of bold, contemporary volumes using basalt stone, a vernacular material.
Geometrical openings interrupt the grey stone facade to offer dwellers views of the southern plains, mountains and nearby river. Outdoor spaces feature prominently, from recessed balconies to cantilevered terraces framed by a strikingly shaped overhang. “Gray Villa is the representation of a modern approach, color, volume, connection with nature and a reflection of thought,” the studio says. “It’s settled in a peaceful way in nature.” More from the studio on their website and Instagram.
