In developing a series of buildings on Hawaii’s Big Island, Walker Warner Architects took the opportunity to pay homage to the traditional dwellings of the island in the creation of one luxurious home. The separate volumes function as garage, bedrooms and main living space, with the cluster of four buildings all heeding the island’s tried and tested approach of linking the inside with the outside. Inviting the landscape in, the dwellings forego closed walls and opt for sliding glass doors that wrap around steel columns and open up to the surroundings, which were landscaped by David Y. Tamura.
Inside, hardened lava rock, mahogany, and cedar contribute to the tasteful decor by Philpotts Interiors from which the owners can enjoy sightlines over the ocean. Speaking on the project, Greg Warner, partner at the studio, explains the desire to “strike a balance between modernity and tradition”, an element of the brief achieved with the Makani Eka House.
