Seven years after the refurbishment of their home in the historic Spanish village of Cruïlles in Girona, clients once again sought out Barcelona-based Majoral Tissino Architects after purchasing the property next door, asking them to refurbish and connect the newly-acquired volume, which had stone walls and a traditional tiled roof, to their existing home.
Both houses were linked through their ground floors via a large vaulted hall. Located in the village’s historic urban core, the new building had a vaulted, semi-buried ground floor, which was converted into a large living area with its own chimney and cocktail bar area. A cluster of stairs leads visitors across tiered levels, while a large window was created along the west-facing façade to bring more light into the space.
A studio area fitted with wood cabinetry and bookshelves was installed on the first level, where a large work desk faces the floor-to-ceiling glazing that opens up to a large courtyard terrace enclosed by stone walls. A water fountain feature, incorporated into a cement bench along one side of the courtyard, adds a soothing soundtrack to the tranquil outdoor space.
The final set of stairs leads to a mezzanine bedroom nestled under the gabled roof. Views of Montgrí and Cruïlles’ emblematic tower can be seen from the top floor windows.
