Controversial from the moment it opened – with comments on the private money that funded the Hudson Yards project and its essential lack of a defined use (aside from climbing up and down for the views) – Heatherwick Studio’s Vessel has closed to the public indefinitely after the death by suicide of a 21-year-old man who jumped from the structure, making the third death at the site in less than a year. Prompted to take action by the latest tragedy, the developers of Hudson Yards have sought to liaise with suicide prevention experts on new steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

On opening in 2016, remarks were made concerning the potential risk of chest height rails that ran all the way to the top of the 46-meter-tall sculpture. Heatherwick Studios and Related Companies (who commissioned the Vessel) are in discussions as to what can be done to reopen the Vessel in the future with new preventative measures.
