We’re completely smitten with the work of London-based Julie Cockburn, who layers found photographs with incredibly detailed stitch work, all done by hand, of course.

Embroidery is a laborious task, especially when paper is the material it’s being applied to. But Cockburn’s intense and methodical hand-embroidery yields playful and cheery results. The severe and composed poses of the subjects in her found portraits are transformed into contemporary works of art, body parts and faces concealed by funky geometric shapes in vibrantly hued thread. Spontaneity and discipline, maturity and naivety — her oeuvres are a play of contrasts, always infused with an exciting energy.
