In 1000 years, when our ancestors have left earth behind for the harsh realities of life on Mars, they’ll look back to this new prototype by Xiaomi and Open Architecture as the spark that inspired their new home planet’s housing stock. Okay, maybe not, but who can deny that this minimal pod house from Open would look out of place on the Red planet?

Designed in conjunction with Chinese electronics company Xiaomi, the house entitled MARS Case, answers the questions posed by the potential of future living spaces. Imagining humanity is forced to relocate to Mars, the studio created a zero-waste, lightweight home that recycles its own energy. Partly inflatable – and foldable – the pod may not ever make it to Mars, but its connected, smart design serves as inspiration for more immediate answers to sustainable living.
