While the world of sneaker collecting and trading has lost some of the purity it once had, when the passion was more for the shoe than the resale value, there are still those in the subculture with heart. Australian-born, London transplant Henry Davies is a Vans obsessive who has turned the hunt for vintage Vans into a career.
Starting as a blog and then a modest shop on a residential Hackney backstreet, The Other Side of the Pillow relaunched as Pillow Heat with a new Clapton store and an interactive website in 2015. Selling the holy grail of deadstock vans shoes, all made in the USA or Europe, his store features some of the hardest to find Vans anywhere in the world. An active collector for around 17 years, the seed was planted with his first glimpse of the red checkerboard slip-on in an old BMX catalogue in 1996 and he hasn’t looked back. Not only a shop but something of a museum to rad, 70s, 80s and 90s style, if collecting is the journey, then Pillow Heat is the destination.
