The Townships Farmhouse in North Hatley, Canada was built by LAMAS (Lee and Macgillivray Architecture Studio) for an artist/farmer couple on their 200-acre property. Reflecting their interest in land conservation and agricultural building preservation, the farmhouse integrates various architectural styles and features typically found in the surrounding townships and region.
The exterior is clad in hemlock wood, salvaged from other deteriorated barns. And just like the Ontario farmhouses built after the 1850s, Townships Farmhouse has a central courtyard that is protected from winter winds, while being able to open up to the surrounding landscape in the summertime.
Inside, the home is modern and tastefully decorated, a large open space without the constraints of thresholds or narrow passages. Most importantly, sustainability was meticulously integrated throughout the entire project, from the geothermal heating and cooling systems to the selection of materials.
