These images by London-based photographer and screenwriter Toby Harvard are atmospheric and dreamy, filled with punchy colours and bleeding hues. Using a 35mm film camera, we’re treated to beautiful film grain and wonderful bokeh, each picture painting a moment in that special way only analog photography can.
Toby is self-taught, stating that he points and shoots and hopes for a decent photo to come out. This casual, non-technical approach is what makes his work so exciting, coupled with his willingness to change perspectives: an entire series of his portfolio is dedicated to people’s backs, while his portraiture, often shot in low-light conditions, is an intimate close-up of his subject’s face.
“I love street photography and candid shots of strangers going about their business. People’s expressions are fascinating when they don’t know they’re being photographed,” says Toby in an interview with Lomography. “I’ve recently been working with models more, and am adjusting to the more deliberate, considered framing and lighting that that entails. I like to keep trying new things.”
