Felt sculpture artist Lucy Sparrow, previously featured here, once filled a Bethnal Green corner store with over 4000 hand-sewn felt grocery items. This time she’s back with an array of goods that will tempt – or awaken – the petty criminal in you.
Shoplifting is the title of her latest exhibit taking place at London’s Lawrence Alkin Gallery this November 4 to 26, 2016. Filling rooms with the most common goods swiped from shelves in the UK, Sparrow’s collection scrutinizes a shoplifter’s type and profile. And with a list that includes low-key items such as condoms, ham, migraine tablets, fake lashes and gum, it seems that the majority of shoplifters aren’t ready to bust out the Mona Lisa from the Louvre just yet.
So is shoplifting just a cheap thrill, an act of rebellion, a folly of youth? Drop by the exhibit to find out… and if you’re feeling frisky, make sure you check for surveillance cameras first.
