Don’t be intimidated by these prickly, out-of-this-world creatures: it’s safe to pet them, they’re friendlier than you think, especially once you realize that they’re made out of the pencils.
After graduating from Masachussett’s College of Art and Design, artist Jennifer Maestre dabbled and experimented with various materials and techniques to create her sculptures before eventually hitting on the idea to use pencils: by cutting them into 1-inch sections and stitching them together, Maestre found that they allowed more potential in creating her desired forms.
Her fascination for sea urchins, flora, fauna and mythology are evident in her organic pencil sculptures. Maestre deftly combines vulnerability and brutality in her work, coaxing rigid textures into a smooth, otherworldly creatures that are somewhere between plant and animal, all freakishly beautiful.
