The blue-tinged hues of the eerily deserted Russian landscapes set the tone for Somnambulant, the dark and intriguing series by Sydney-based photographer Jonathan May.
With his instinctual ability to conceptualise and present a story in a unique manner, the project is comprised of a short text and visuals which revolve around a fictional character named Yuri, a senior officer who started sleepwalking after leaving military service. May’s use of lighting and cinematography subtly heighten the tension in each frame, putting us in the shoes of a somnambulant who opens his eyes to find himself in strange places after his unconscious nocturnal wanderings. It is a brave attempt to explore the disorienting act of somnambulation, and May succeeds spectacularly.
