Defining her work as ‘looking to the past to say something about the present’, photographer Kalin Haydon’s nostalgia drenched images of middle America’s pursuit of leisure capture the unchanging traditions that pass from generation to generation. In her series American Nest: Bingo and American Nest: Bowling, Haydon looks to the bingo halls and bowling alleys of Illinois to explore the social spaces that her parents and grandparents passed down memories of.
While the act of going to the bingo or taking off to the bowling alley is a regular, everyday thing for her subjects, Haydon sees the reflective, meditative qualities of visiting the same places, with the same people, in the same communities as keeping a very American tradition alive – and the images speak for themselves.
