Javier Riera is an a Madrid-based artist who casts light projections of geometric patterns on landscapes and vegetation to create ephemeral works of art called Landscape Light Interventions. The installations examine the connection between geometric forms and nature which result in stunning, otherworldly visual spectacles. The landscapes Riera choses are not accidental; after careful consideration, he brings together locations and shapes which he feels resonate strongly with each other.
“The light projections that I create are either static or have a slight and subtle movement, calling out for a certain meditative experience,” he says. “They transform completely the space and they intervene as light sculptures or sceneographies, generating a dialogue between nature, geometry and the spectator.”
Riera’s site-specific landscape interventions have graced public spaces and art festivals around Europe, notably in Madrid’s El Retiro Park and Botanical Gardens, Valencia’s Turia Gardens, Prague’s SIGNAL Festival and the Annecy Paysages in France; and has been exhibited in the Museum Reina Sofia, the Niemeyer Center and the Galego Art Centre.
