Fans of flower arranging and desk organizing will lose their collective minds over the sculptural project Containers of Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist Erica Prince. Taking on whimsical forms inspired by 17th century Dutch tulipieres and retro-futurist architecture, her functional creations encourage us to explore variations and create visual narratives of our own choosing. Equipped with spouts, tubes and holes, the biomorphic forms seem to possess their own personalities. With the possibility to arrange, decorate and compartmentalize, Containers is an interactive object that stimulates our imagination and creativity.
Prince glazes her ceramics in a range of neutral palettes, a blank canvas ready for styling. Each piece is unique, embracing the subtle, organic imperfections of wabi-sabi style ceramics. “We are surrounded by machine-made objects and their perfect isn’t so special to us anymore,” she explains. “Handmade objects slow us down — their nuances imbue them with personality and energy, reminding us of our humanity.”
