Fashion Designer Izzy Du Takes the Unorthodox into the Wearable

We speak for everyone when we say that there’s nothing quite like the striking designs of Izzy Du. A graduate of Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Du’s final presentation centered on grandiose shapes and unconventional silhouettes. The 2021 collection, named Terranova, is a fitting example of just how far the Chinese-Canadian artist is willing to push the creative boundaries of fashion.

To bring her vision to life, Du’s sketches came into fruition with the help of digital rendering and 3D printing. Her structured designs appear in the form of puffer jackets, outerwear and elaborate dresses, each of them ballooning out or draping romantically across the wearer’s body like sculptural pieces — which, let’s face it, they are. The outrageous shapes are tempered by her choice of soothing fabric colors and tints, which Du explains were inspired by her love for sunsets and landscapes.

But Du’s collection is much more than just whimsy. Each garment is the result of long hours, hundreds of pattern pieces, and highly intricate technical know-how. The successful reception of Terranova essentially became a prelude to Du’s eponymous brand, which pursues the young designer’s exploration of distortion and dimensions, and her uncanny ability to bring the unorthodox into the wearable.
