An exciting interplay between luxurious materials and simple forms greet visitors who step through the doors of Penthouse L, a two-storey apartment occupying the 9th and 10th floors of a new building in Vienna, Austria. Taking the helm of this immense project, which rounds up to 165 square meter of indoor space and 380 square meters of outdoor terraces, is local architecture studio destilat, certainly no rookies when it comes to designing huge, expansive spaces.
The interiors feature a gorgeous mix of materials throughout the entire space. The living room is a picture of classical modernism with a black porcelain stoneware wall that is paired with a white marble hearth that holds a bioethanol fireplace; beside it, a staircase appears almost weightless with its metal steps discretely held up by a central support and strut railing. Back-lit mirrors and diffused wall lighting offer subtle nods to the 70s as well.
Bespoke wooden fixtures in dark tones is the coherent presence that visually ties the whole apartment together, adding warmth to the rooms in addition to the marble, porcelain and high-pile velour material palette.
Penthouse L’s pièce de résistance is its outdoor terrace, a spacious three-sided space equipped with an outdoor sauna, whirlpool and infinity pool, offering enviable views of the Viennese rooftops.
