Home renovations can be a slow process, but the 20 years taken by an architect couple (Rebecca Rudolph, founder of Design, Bitches, and her husband Colin Thompson) in Los Angeles is an impressive timescale. Having updated the classic bungalow several times over the years as their family grew and their lifestyle changed, the building’s latest iteration signaled the arrival of their dream home. Poised at the heart of a verdant garden, complete with a swimming pool and decked terraces, the new home replaced the previous bungalow, with a new two-story structure taking its place across an extended footprint. Clad in concrete fiberboards, the building blends in against the lush foliage of mature trees that surround the home.Â
The priority for the new design was assigning the indoor and outdoor spaces equal importance, which left a beautifully landscaped wraparound garden, that provides stunning sightlines through the large swathes of glass that cover aspects of the home.
The eccentricities of the interior design are partly a factor of the materials used across the previous 20 years all coming together in the home’s newest guise. Across the space, polished concrete, oak, and encaustic tiles play off each other to give the space a beautiful, homely materiality and playfulness, all enhanced by bold color choices.
