In China’s Yunnan province, the restaurant 50% Cloud is hosted in one of the red-brick domed building clusters that are part of the sprawling, land art installation complex by local artist Luo Xu.

Situated in Dongfengyun, fast becoming an artistic and cultural base in Yunnan, the restaurant interiors were conceptualised by Hong Kong architecture studio Cheng Chung Design (CCD). Given such an unusual canvas to work with, the studio composed an interior that would celebrate and enhance its solid facades, curved contours and soaring volumes, while subtly hinting at Art Deco influences.

With the only light source coming from skylights – nary a window in sight – CCD designed the restaurant’s floor plan in accordance with the light, plunging diners in an intimate setting. The contrast between rough brick and soft lighting, paired with bespoke furnishings, contribute to a truly unique and fascinating dining experience that fuses of art, architecture and gastronomy in one sitting.
