Amidst the spectacular scenery of California wine country, artist Olafur Eliasson has added his own mark to the landscape for one of the region’s wineries. The Donum Estate – located in the heart of Sonoma, north of San Francisco – commissioned Eliasson’s Studio Other Spaces to develop a pavilion to contribute to their holdings, which feature other ‘architectural experiences’ alongside the production of a range of wines. The structure that the studio delivered is named the ‘Vertical Panorama Pavilion’ and will host wine tastings for guests, who will enjoy the fruits of the vineyard’s process, sheltered from the sun beneath Eliasson’s multi-colored canopy.
The shelter was inspired by the light that pours over the estate and the colors it produces, with Eliasson noting the spectrum of shades across the land during a walk around the estate with the Donum owners. The colors of the estate are transferred into the kaleidoscopic canopy that sits perched on a hill overlooking the lands. Speaking on the project Eliasson noted, “The specific design elements are abstractions of components taken from a vertical slice through the pavilion’s location on the Estate. The pavilion maps out the surrounding ephemera – the soil, vegetation, wind, sun, atmosphere, and rain – and incorporates these into the colorful canopy, reflecting the wine’s unique signature.” Guests can book tasting experiences at the Donum Estate starting from $95 per person.
