At the start of a new year in which we all need wholesome, feel-good stories more than ever, the case of liberal arts college Berea College is more welcome than ever. Located in rural Kentucky, Berea College is one of the only higher education institutions in the U.S. at which enrolment is free thanks to the college’s generous Tuition Promise Scholarship. In lieu of payment, all students are encouraged to take a job on campus to give back to the model that sustains them.
One area of the work-study model is the Craft Education sector, where students learn artisanal crafts in workshops that fulfil a number of important roles for the college. The program helps to keep traditional techniques alive, impart new skills on students, and earn money for the college via its online shop, lending it huge importance for student and college alike. Courses in woodworking, ceramics, broomcraft, and weaving are key to the creation of the beautiful products that arrive on the college’s webshop intermittently. Check out some of the fruits of the student faculty’s labors below.
