Adrienne Hugh Designs Fictional Medication Aimed to Soothe the City Dweller’s Soul

Spanning branding, illustration and packaging design, the portfolio of illustrator and designer Adrienne Hugh takes us along a stimulating creative journey with obvious influences of her cross-cultural background of being born in LA, bred in Asia, and based in New York City.

Her series Modern Medicine Co. presents a fictional line of medication inspired by traditional Chinese medicine. The East-meets-West project is a nod to the vibrant visual culture and history of Chinese medicine packaging often found in Asia, particularly in Hong Kong. The imagined products, however, are cures to soothe not the physical but emotional ailments that plague those who live in Hong Kong. Tackling relevant social and environmental issues, Adrienne created beautifully-designed labels for Chill Pills, Identity Plasters, Energy Boosters and Detox Pills, aimed to alleviate pains of city living (“For the days when you can’t see the stars in the sky or the buildings in the distance,” claims the label on one pill bottle).

The series was the artist’s Independent Study at the Rhode Island School of Design where she graduated. Discover more of her work on her website and Instagram.
