Modern Studio by Harrison Design is the Perfect Writer’s Cabin

Architect Bulent Baydar of Harrison Design, an Atlanta-based architecture firm working across the US, designed a detached wood-and-glass cabin for a writer client, conveniently located in his own backyard.

Modern Studio sits in a wooded area on the client’s Arlington, Virginia property, surrounded by grass and wood and constantly flooded in sunlight. Compensating for its small footprint is its cedar ceiling that rises 14 feet (4.2 meters) overhead, its height allowing for a second row of angled windows that make the cabin seem bigger than it really is.

A bookshelf occupies an entire wall, with two pivoting shelves acting as doors that open up to a half bath and storage space. An organic material palette of cedarwood and weathered planks from reclaimed oak whiskey barrels contributes to the warmth of the entire space, complementing the cabin’s more contemporary elements of glass and steel. Cornered folding doors open up to connect to the outdoors, enhancing the cabin’s sense of expansiveness. The cabin is completed by lines of classic modern furniture and lighting fixtures, framed family photos and personal mementoes.

Though initially designed for quiet contemplation and hours of writing, Modern Studio also doubles as a unique space for entertaining when having guests over. Follow the studio on Instagram.
