Initially designed as a weekend getaway for a Silicon Valley-based family, the Mal Paso Residence turned out to be the ultimate quarantine escape during the COVID-19 pandemic. Studio Schicketanz, headed by founder and principal architect Mary Ann Schicketanz, designed four interconnected pavilions with openings that framed breathtaking views of the coastline and surrounding meadow from different angles.
The sustainable home, nestled into a hillside in northern Big Sur, simultaneously showcased its surroundings while blending into it. Sections of the roof are planted with native grasses to give off the impression of the hillside spilling over the top of the home, while the textured façades and retaining walls were kept in discreet neutral and earth tones so as not to visually disturb the landscape. To savour its idyllic location, the studio created large openings fit for an indoor-outdoor lifestyle. The social volume — an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area — sits between floor-to-ceiling windows that open up to the pool and patio on its ocean-front side, and a quieter central courtyard on the other.
A darker material palette was used for the interiors. Warm wood hues contrast with the splashes of color afforded by the carefully-chosen furnishings and materials, the most notable ones being the red custom Bisazza mosaic kitchen backsplash and the striking artworks and sculptures on display around the house. Bespoke beds, ottomans, bookshelves and media cabinets coexist with pieces by Piet Boon, B&B Italia, Concrete Works, Phillip Jeffries, Tai Ping and a slew of other designers and studios.
Connected by glass corridors, the remaining volumes house the private bedroom quarters, as well as a cozy den and billiards room.
Sustainability was worked into the design as much as possible. Solar panels and Tesla Power Walls provide for the home’s electricity needs, including electric vehicle charging and pool heating.
At once comfortable and luxurious, and with its aim to connect its dwellers with nature, the Mal Paso Residence has all the makings of a restful retreat.
