Renovated Early Victorian Workers Cottage by Walter&Walter

With the familiar and specific qualities of an early Victorian workers cottage in mind, Melbourne design office Walter & Walter have modified this House in St Kilda East to embrace sustainable concepts of small footprint living.

The rectangular home renovation created a maximised space and function for each room. From the front garden, the home opens up to main living space, with the kitchen, dining room, and master’s bedroom linked through a corridor running down the entire length of the house. The second floor was fitted with two other bedrooms and a bath.

Natural light enters the home via a skylight, an essential feature for the middle part of the home that normally remains dark due to its narrow form. The rear facade was clad in a corrugated yet perforated material, allowing air and light into the space.
