Amsterdam-based architecture practice Studioninedots design a home whose volumes alternate between the indoors and outdoors in Eindhoven for a family looking to live a more nature-centric and minimalist lifestyle.
Villa Fifty-Fifty is a pavilion-like home spread expansively across the property, a structure of glass walls, polished aluminium, corrugated polycarbonate and flagstones, all in a neutral, industrial palette of gray. Enclosed living spaces segue into an open-air patio before leading visitors back into a room again… a chequerboard pattern of nature and building where boundaries and functions of are blurred. Explaining their design process, the studio says, “We set ourselves the challenge to design beyond maximising transparency – instead we treated all functions with equal importance, regardless of their location indoors or outdoors.”
Shared family spaces and the master bedroom are appointed to the ground floor, while the children’s bedrooms are housed in the self-contained tower. Despite the home’s industrial aesthetic, the spaces are warmed by soft lighting and wooden furnishings. Ideally designed to maximize interaction between landscape and architecture, as well as between its dwellers, Villa Fifty-Fifty truly pushes the typology of the transparent house.
