In contrast to the constricted living spaces Tokyo is known for, the Todoroki House by the Paris-based studio Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane Architects is an unexpected oasis awash in light and surrounded by the greenery. Located in proximity of the Todoroki Ravine, where contrasting humid air and dry winds meet, the studio attempted to “combine the various building types that have been shaped into these wet and dry environments into a single house.”
The ground floor is hidden from view by the jungle, a serene common area with light passing through the double-height windows. A spiral staircase leads to the second floor mezzanine, where the master bedroom is located. The third floor, as with the rest of the house, offers magnificent views of the surrounding landscape. With its subdued and minimalist aesthetic and wooden accents, Todoroki House is a surprising pocket of calm in a fast-paced city.
