Surreal Encounters with the Pixel-Ridden Paintings of Aldo Sergio

The paintings of Milan-based Aldo Sergio are like exciting plot twists. At first glance, they come across as ordinary, classically-rendered oil paintings. Lean in closer, though, and something is bound to jump out at you. A single line of pixels running across the canvas, perhaps; or a group of men contemplating the blurred form of a bunch of bananas. Sergio deliberately skews the overall harmony of his paintings with surreal themes and references to pop culture, religious iconography and the digital age. Peppered with slight malfunctions, implied censorship and cheekiness, his works are delightful juxtapositions of classic and contemporary.

His solo show, Santo Cielo, is currently at the Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan until November 30, 2018. Visit his website and Instagram for more.
