Prowling the streets and transport systems of Tokyo with camera in hand since 2010, photographer Shin Noguchi has a knack for capturing the peculiar, surreal and strangely beautiful shapes and situations that humans tend to wrap themselves into. From heads in washing machines to salarymen slumped disconsolately on subway cars, when a stranger strikes a pose in Tokyo, Noguchi is there to photograph it for his series, Something Here.
The key for Noguchi is to capture the sometimes-stilted flow of everyday life, to discover and present the complexities of Japanese culture without using staged scenes. Explaining his philosophy, he says, “Street photography always projects ‘truth’. The ‘truth’ that I talk about isn’t necessarily that I can see, but they also exist in society, in street, in people’s lives, and I always try to capture reality beyond my own values and viewpoint/perspective.”
