A Breezy, Open Space Home in Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh-based architecture studio Tropical Space is committed to environmental-friendly building practices using sustainable materials, which they adapted in the making of this lovely open space home, the Long An House, for a family living in My Hanh Nam, Vietnam.

Due to the hot and humid climate, it was important for the home to have proper ventilation; the use of porous walls was an effective solution, as it allowed the flow of light and air to enter the home.

Occupants of the home are constantly connected to nature, where they can admire trees and plants from the large entrances and openings throughout the structure, and take advantage of the calming presence of a pond in the central courtyard. The open-space layout stretches from front to back, creating functional spaces whose boundaries from each other are estimated by light with different intensities. The mezzanine hosts two bedrooms and a reading nook, each room accessible via a long corridor.

“We want to have a continuous space in and out of the house, so that the children can play and move freely throughout the house without being confined by walls,” say the architects.
