First there were animals, then came flowers and now innovative photographer Miguel Vallinas has turned to inanimate objects to help his creative subversion of the human form. Entitled ‘Ceci n’est pas’, translating as ‘This is not’, the project features static human forms whose heads have been swapped for a lineup of inanimate objects ranging from disco balls to houses.
The disconnect between body and object is unsettling in that the two entities somehow complete each other. Representing thoughts, dreams and fleeting feelings, the surreal characters, inspired my Magritte’s ‘Ceci n’est pas une pipe’, lead viewers to question themselves. “The focus is produced by the unacceptance of that which we observe being something else,” say Vallinas, “It is everything that is implicit in our existence and that that which is definitely ours is the result of our circumstances, our wins, our errors, and our judgements.”
