The Casa dos Triangulos was built in 1956 by Vilanova Artigas and over 50 years on the home has undergone a renovation by Metropole Arquitetos that was sympathetic to the bones of the original mid-century icon. Located in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the home sits in a residential neighborhood where its raised block construction creates a dramatically different impression to its neighboring properties. Four floors on half levels contribute an interesting up and down open floor plan that has been kept untouched over the years, however, other areas of the property have been reinterpreted to contribute a greater sense of freedom for contemporary uses.
Servants quarters have been removed in favor of a better connection between the home and its gardens, which in turn reveals better views of the cantilevered rear of the house and makes a clearer example of the geometric painted mural that covers the facade. With over 50 years of life in its bones, many elements of the renovation were deeper than mere cosmetics, with asbestos removed along with cracked mortar and two new water tanks added to the roof out of sight.
