No idea is too absurd, too illogical or too unconventional for Tod Kapke when it comes to photography. The Denver-based photographer and artist has never shied away from experimentation: his work is often a mix of mediums ranging from painting, sculpture, collages, prop and set design. Artists like animator Tex Avery to photographer Ralph Eugene Meatyard have been big influences in his work.
Featuring themes of suburbia, monsters or folklore, Kapke’s photography shows just how potent a storyteller he is. His portfolio gleefully swings from dark to quirky, from real to made-up. His cinematic compositions recount stories where creatures roam the streets like a twisted neighborhood night patrol, watching humans sleep or sitting atop abandoned furniture. The images featured below, you’ll agree, are like fairytales gone awry. And we can’t get enough of them.
