It has the look of a pop-up food market that you’d find in any metropolitan city these days, but this colourful arrangement of huts has a more altruistic function to it. A project led by Lehrer Architects to tackle homelessness in Los Angeles, the Alexandria Park Tiny Home Village is a community of micro-homes that has been developed across a range of leftover plots of land. The huts are small but functional, using prefabricated pallet shelters imbued with a sense of character with the use of vibrant colors.
The idea of the tiny home village is based on ‘dignity through design’, with the huts geared to act as a temporary home and lifeline to cover the difficult period between coming off the street and finding permanent housing. Set up in 1985, Lehrer Architects are led by projects that tend to nurture community and improve quality of life and the firm has a history of working to improve the lot of vulnerable groups.
