Feldman Architecture turns a Dark Cottage into a Dreamy California Hideaway

Created as a retreat for a couple ready to escape their busy lives in the city, this classic California cottage renovated by Feldman Architecture was opened up into a contemporary hideaway, making the most of the gorgeous alpine landscape and surrounding mountain views.

The dark, closed-off interior of the cottage was gutted to create an open plan that draws the gaze outwards onto a manicured garden and pool. Original features were kept as the renovation uncovered features like Douglas fir ceilings, while modern additions used local wood for elements including the flooring and interior doors. Nicknamed The Shack, the property is located on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco in Marin County where it provides secluded solace to its owners, photographer Catherine Wagner and designer Loretta Gargan.
