It’s time to drop your misconceptions and come round to the undeniable fact that bugs are beautiful. In a project designed to engage viewers in the exoticism of entomology, photographer, illustrator and designer Francesco Bagnato shot a collection of jewel beetles for his models.
Based in Milan, Italy, Bagnato has loved insects and animals since he was a child, with his youthful obsession inspiring his current project, entitled Entomology. Shooting on a 100mm macro lens, his portraits capture the shimmering, iridescent armor of this particular species of beetles, their neon shells popping even more against the black background. So often overlooked as creepy crawlies, these well-lit specimens offer a glimpse of the beauty that lies in the detail – you just have to look close enough.
