A Stunning Visual Exploration of the Philippines by Dave Carswell

The series Our Daily Bread is visual narrative of photographer Dave Carswell’s sojourn in the Philippines, where he lived in 2015. Shot in black and white film, his poignant portraits of people and landscapes are raw and unstaged glimpses of everyday life, displaying his natural aptitude for drawing out something special from a mundane situation. “I find myself increasingly fascinated with the banalities of every day life, dark humour and urban anxieties that very few people stop to smell,” he says. “I think a lot of it boils down to ‘quiet tension’”.

The Melbourne-based Carswell is set to release his first book Dancing in the Shadows (out this January 11, 2018), which is a playful look at the resistance of the Filipino people’s struggle for public space through the eye of a basketball hoop.
