The rugged landscape of Northern California‘s Big Sur welcomes the residence dubbed JFR, a two-bedroom holiday home crafted by Fougeron Architecture. Defined by a thin butterfly roof and glass-fitted corners, the home opens up to views of iconic redwoods and canyon ridges.
Four interconnected volumes make up the spatially complex structure. Inside, the home is a study in thoughtful space utilization. Bedrooms bookmark the ground floor, flanking a central two-story communal area complete with a fireplace room—a nod to Bernard Maybeck’s architectural style. The bedrooms enjoy towering 15-foot high windows, drawing an invisible line between the indoors and the outdoors.
On the second floor is a loft library and communal sleeping area, separated from the lower level by glass panels. This clever use of glass throughout the dwelling creates an airy, open feel while maintaining the structure’s modernist aesthetic. More from Fougeron Architecture.
