The Shokan House: a contemporary glass house in the Catskill Mountains

The Shokan House, located on a 20-acre plot in the Catskill Mountains northwest of New York, serves as the family residence of owner and architect Jay Bargmann of Raphael Vinoly Architects. The architectural design highlights towering ceilings, while the use of steel, glass, concrete, ceramic, and wood remains raw and untouched, emphasizing the volume and character of the structure. “Every piece records the construction of the house and is essential to the concept,” says the studio.

At the heart of the home lies a fireplace nestled within a concrete wall vestibule, complemented by walnut cabinetry and a stainless steel kitchen. The interiors, mirroring the architectural style, are meticulously designed to exude a blend of ruggedness and refinement. The living space is adorned with several Eames lounges, accompanied by matching footrests, creating a minimalist ambiance. Whether you’re a fan of its minimalism or not, nothing could be said about the fantastic views of the surrounding landscape, which can be enjoyed from practically every corner of this breathtaking contemporary home.
