Whether it’s overgrown bushels of flowers covering their faces or turned heads dancing between the vines, the women of Clare Elsaesser’s paintings always possess an angelic quality. The lack of any exact facial configuration lends her paintings the ability to connect with its viewers. There is an obscurity, something hidden, yet familiar in the women portrayed. Elsaesser paints with a delicateness that captures a touching vulnerability. Gorgeous bouquets of flowers cascade around bodies that create a setting all of their own. Although most of the paintings have a single color washed across the background, each woman fills a part of her own space, whether against a brightly colored wall or elsewhere, giving the viewer the ability to feel a part of this ephemeral moment.
