The striking Dhsac Residence is located in Jakarta, where the tropical climate informed the building’s ambitious design. The home was created by Bitte Design Studio, whose plan consists of three main volumes interlinked to create a purposeful sense of division among the spaces across the interior. Taking over a large parcel of land, the handsome two-story building is surrounded by immaculate lawns and mature hedges that offer privacy to a structure that commands attention. Large, slatted walls sit on top of the solid brick base of the first level, with a flat roof elegantly perched on top, utilising an overhanging edge to shield from the sun. If the outside merely hints at mid-century modern style, the inside hammers the point home with swathes of dark wood panelling, Eames furniture, low-hanging Louis Poulsen pendants, and an inviting mezzanine that overlooks the main living volume.Â
Each of the three volumes benefits from the open, spacious layouts needed to encourage ventilation in this climate. From the entrance, the home introduces a working room and powder room before opening into the main living space whose lounge, kitchen and dining room create the hub of the home. Beyond the main mass, secreted away behind a bookcase, a master suite takes up part of the third volume, looking out over the lush, landscaped gardens complete with a plunge pool. One further highlight is the shimmering pond found below the hanging staircase that connects the two levels, reflecting light that filters through double-height windows that breach both levels.Â
