In the series Avatar, Brazilian-born and London-based photographer Carolina Mizrahi invites us into a world of overwhelming pink, wherein a female character interacts with the different objects in the room – a striking visual that draws parallels to our constant connection to our online personas, and our growing distance to reality because of it.
The set looks and feels like a virtual world, with monotonous hues and a surreal aesthetic. The main character, though physically present, seems detached from her environment as she vacuously surveys the room. And the presence of a goldfish bowl is a symbolism we can’t ignore; it’s a fitting reference to the isolation brought about by the internet and how we can virtually see everything, but cannot physically get close to.
Mizrahi, who pursued photography in London after a career in fashion design in her native Rio de Janeiro, incorporates the power of color, strong female presence and symbolism in her work, which have made rounds in acclaimed publications worldwide including Vogue, Elle, Timeout Magazine, Swarovski and Pandora.
