This Ubud Residence is Topped by a Whimsical, Undulating Roof

Bali-based studio Alexis Dornier is back with Alpha House, a two-storey residence that brings two distinctive expressions of architectural ideas  together. With its boxy ground floor volume topped by an undulating roof pattern of grid shells, the home stands out beautifully against the verdant, tropical backdrop of its Ubud, Indonesia location.

Following the tropical setting vernacular, social spaces are geared towards indoor-outdoor living, with the living, kitchen and dining areas opening up to the exterior’s swimming pool, terrace, lawn and lush gardens.

A staircase leads to the second floor bedrooms. The rhythmic patterns of the wave-shaped roof create intimate and cozy proportions in the bedrooms, which are fronted with narrow balconies that look over the palm trees and the gardens below. The use of heavy local korobokan stone for its base and dark wood to dress the whimsical rooftop perfectly express Alpha House’s character and vision: a solid dwelling that embraces laid-back tropical living.
