Former Broadway actor Adam Hunter now takes center stage in the Los Angeles design scene, with his signature dynamic, bespoke interiors gracing the homes of Neil Patrick Harris, Travis Barker, Christina Hendricks, and other big Hollywood names. For this Pacific Palisades residence, Hunter’s penchant for looking beyond the merely comfortable lined up perfectly with the homeowner’s wife, whose love for bold colors put the designer right at home.
“I always say if you use color, you have to use it very pointedly or you get dated rooms quickly,” the designer says. This modern house boasts of an extensive color palette where each room is its own personality — from its calming, neutral hues and the elegant walnut furniture of the living room, to the stern indigo suede walls of the study, to the playful pink of the children’s bedrooms.
Hunter masterfully makes his desired focal points pop out in some places — like the blood-red chest of drawers he designed himself — while creating harmonious tones in others, like the blue lounge chairs complementing the pool.
His unique eye for color sets this residence apart from the Hamptons-like homes that dominate the area, giving it a whimsical and vibrant feel while retaining an air of elegance all the same. In essence, it’s accomplished only by letting the artist be himself — a trust in the instinct and process of creativity. “It’s all about timing and letting go,” says Hunter. “When you can let your people do what they do best–let your artists paint, let your writers write, let the architects draw– then it all turns out almost magically.” More on Hunter’s website and Instagram.
