Depending on your thoughts on vertigo, you’ll either love the concept of the new mind-bending guesthouse by Studio 10, or, view the warped angles and dizzying symmetry as a kind of nightmare house a la Psycho’s Bates Motel. We’re firmly of the former opinion, in the sense that any chance to slip into an M.C. Escher inspired artwork for a weekend is fine by us. Commissioned by The Other Place, a hotel in Guilin, China, the surreal rooms feature floating staircases and clever color blocking to mimic the optical illusions of Escher’s work. Entitled ‘Dream and Maze’, the rooms are an installation at their essence, yet retain the necessities to allow guests to enjoy the show in comfort, with spacious sleeping areas, king size beds and amenities tucked away to emphasise the out-there nature of the rooms.
